The Municipality of Myślenice is located in the south-central part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, 30 km from Cracow. It belongs entirely to the Cracow Metropolitan Area, which strongly determines a number of its development conditions. As such, in the next 10 years Myślenice is listed alongside Kraków, Niepołomice, Wieliczka, Bochnia and Dobczyce as the centre with the highest development potential in Lesser Poland.
Myślenice has an excellent location, as the E 77 road, of international importance, popularly known as “Zakopianka”, runs through the municipality. It leads from Cracow to the border crossings in Chyżne and Łysa Polana. And just 35km from the centre of Myślenice is Poland’s second largest airport, the John Paul II Airport in Balice. Provincial road No. 967, leading to Łapczyca (direction Tarnów), also begins here. Another important aspect is the proximity to Cracow and all the benefits of a large agglomeration, academic background, access to new technologies, effective and substantive team of officials and experience in cooperation with investors. To increase the attractiveness of the city as a good place to live and invest, the authorities of Myślenice and the surrounding communes have joined the “Railway Plus” programme – a railway connection to Cracow, which will definitely improve the comfort and safety of travelling, and the city will gain a smooth and fast railway connection to Cracow. The local government is also carrying out major investments in the expansion and modernisation of road infrastructure, taking into account the location of Jawornik/Polanka investment areas.
The borough occupies an area of 153.7 km2 , with the town of Myślenice itself – 30.1 km2 . The area of the commune constitutes about 1% of the total area of Lesser Poland Voivodship (Małopolskie Voivodship) and 22.8% of the area of Myślenice Poviat. In the group of urban-rural municipalities Myslenice Commune is the largest in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. An important advantage of the commune is its relatively high forest cover, which amounts to 31.1% of the total area.
Apart from its economic advantages, Myślenice is also a tourist region and a city conducive to relaxation. The wonderful surroundings, the possibility of various forms of activity, the proximity of Cracow, Wieliczka or Zakopane are additional advantages. Basically, there is everything a tourist may expect and this at any time of the year. Walking and hiking in the spring, relaxing by the river in the summer, cycling trips in the autumn and skiing in the winter. There is something for everyone. The accommodation and catering facilities are developing all the time.
The Municipality of Myślenice is surrounded by the Wieliczka Foothills which turn into gentle slopes descending towards the Raba Valley. From the south the basin is closed by the Beskid Makowski range. The town itself is situated at an altitude of 315 metres above sea level on the Raba River near Dobczyce Reservoir and is surrounded by the Dalin, Chelm and Uklejna Hills. The geological structure favours the formation of numerous deeply cut valleys. The main relief unit of the central area of the commune is the Raba Valley. Its length within the commune is approximately 10 km, the eastern section (about 4.5 km) is filled by the waters of the Dobczycki Reservoir. The Raba River basin comprises dozens of streams flowing down the northern and north-western slopes of the Lubomir and Łysina Range and the southern slopes of the Wieliczka Foothills.
